Here is a brief history of the evolution of Zzz Chair...

In 1999, 71 year old Ralph Brooks was enjoying retirement from his contracting career. He was crafting bunk beds in Southern California when a customer asked him if he could make a space-saving sofa bed that was more comfortable than those presently on the market.

At 3 o'clock one morning he got the idea to make the back of the bed removable. This allowed the entire mattress to be used for sleeping, and when converted into the chair position, only a portion of the same mattress would be used for sitting.

During the next four years, Ralph refined his idea. With knowledge that a “platform design” bed is accepted as the most comfortable bed because of its support structure, he set out to develop a new concept. He invented a rail system that allowed the bed to be easily pulled straight out with no folding springs. This design eliminated the universally hated horizontal bar that went across everyone's back who slept on a "hide-a-bed". Equally important, this rail system allowed the platform bed to be pulled out to a lounger as well as a 6'4'' sleeping surface. He patented the design for the “chair/love seat/sofa- lounger-bed”.

Now came the BIG test! Would Ralph’s 80 year old wife be able to work the chair/bed? He knew that if she could do it, anyone could! After two more years of daily research and development, they finally got it so easily maneuverable that she could work it all by herself.

Ralph and his wife then decided to show it to their son, Stephen Drilling, who immediately saw the potential. Having been a business owner since 1978, Stephen saw the need to add the new “Zzz Chair” to one of his companies’, ACS Services, Inc., based out of Euless, Texas. Their goal was to make the Zzz Chair attractive, comfortable, incredibly durable and fairly priced. After numerous prototypes, the final design was taken to a large American contract furniture manufacturer who helped “tweak” the design even more. We are proud that we are able to say, “Zzz Chair is made in the USA”!

One of the major improvements is the use of Visco Elastic Foam. This makes our platform sleeping surfaces the most comfortable in the convertible marketplace.

The name is self-explanatory. Catching Zzz's in Zzz Chair, Zzz Love, or Zzz Sofa is as easy as one-two-Zzzzzzzz…………
